We recommend allowing at least two hours. You can move through it quickly, but you shouldn’t. The day already has enough motion.
Save the Freedom Center for a history-first day
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is across the river in downtown Cincinnati. It is a serious, substantial museum, not a quick detour after the Aquarium.
Its official guidance says to allow three to four hours. In August 2026, regular hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. Adult admission is listed at $21.50, with lower Wednesday and Thursday pricing. Northern Kentucky Transportation Begins With TANK
TANK, the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky, is the backbone of car-free movement here. It serves Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties, with service into downtown Cincinnati. This is not a sightseeing trolley that appears when it is convenient. It is public transportation, and public transportation rewards preparation.
Plan the Bus by Destination, Not Route Number
Begin with where you want to go, then use TANK’s official route maps and schedules to find the route that fits. The current route list includes local service around Covington, Newport, Florence, Crestview Hills, Northern Kentucky University, and other communities, along with commuter routes.
Check both directions. A route that gets you to lunch is not helpful if the return trip leaves before your concert ends.
We recommend saving the schedule on your phone and taking a screenshot before you leave Wi-Fi. Look at weekday, Saturday, and Sunday service separately. Those columns are not interchangeable.
The return trip needs a plan before your first museum ticket is scanned.
Carry the Right Fare and a Backup Plan
TANK says cash riders should bring exact fare. Do not board expecting the driver to make change. The current TANK fare chart lists the Southbank Shuttle at $2 and a one-day pass at $4, which is often the better choice when you expect several rides.
A day pass is not necessary for one short trip. It is practical when your day includes a hotel, two river cities, and a crossing into Cincinnati.
Good Northern Kentucky transportation is not complicated, but it is deliberate. Know the next bus before the current one closes its doors.
Use the Southbank Shuttle for the River Cities
The Southbank Shuttle is the useful little connector many visitors overlook. It links the Kentucky riverfront communities with downtown Cincinnati, which means you can move between Covington, Newport, The Banks, and the Freedom Center area without driving over a bridge.
Treat the Shuttle as Transit, Not a Tour
The shuttle is a public bus route with short, practical stops. It is an excellent choice after a Newport attraction, before a Cincinnati Reds game, or when you want to eat in Covington and finish your evening near the Ohio River.
Its Cincinnati routing uses Second and Third streets. That matters. Do not assume it will carry you deep into downtown Cincinnati or directly to every Over-the-Rhine stop.

Make the Banks Your Transfer Point
The stop near Second and Vine places you close to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, The Banks, Great American Ball Park, and connections to Cincinnati’s Connector streetcar. That transfer point opens more of downtown without forcing you into an expensive rideshare.

Use Riverfront Commons for Open-Air Travel

Use completed sections for a walk, jog, or bike ride, but check for construction notices before depending on the whole corridor. Bridge work can change access. A trail detour is manageable when you know about it before sunset.
Bicycles and Rideshares Fill the Gaps
Some trips are too long for walking and too awkward for a bus transfer. A bicycle or rideshare can settle that problem without turning your whole vacation into a car rental.
Rent a Bike for a Short, Flat Day
Red Bike is Cincinnati’s station-based bike-share system, and it can work well when stations line up with your plans. Its published two-hour pass is $12, with unlimited trips of up to two hours and an added charge for time beyond that limit.
Use a bike for riverfront paths, downtown Cincinnati blocks, and short point-to-point travel. Do not rent one because you feel obligated to prove something. Northern Kentucky has real hills, and places such as Devou Park demand more effort than a casual vacation ride.
Wear what you need, watch the weather, and dock the bike correctly. A bike is freedom only when it does not become another clock to manage.
Let Rideshare Handle the Hard Parts

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is in Hebron, Kentucky, but it is not close to the riverfront attractions. That distance must be faced honestly before you book a car-free itinerary.
Use the 2X Airporter When Its Schedule Fits
CVG lists TANK public transit at the Baggage Claim level on its ground transportation page. The named airport route is TANK’s 2X Airporter.
Check the current schedule before booking a flight around it. An airport bus can save money, but only if its service hours meet your arrival and departure times. If they do not, use a rideshare for that one leg and keep the rest of your visit car-free.
Do Not Force Farther Attractions Into One Transit Day
